The Department of Endocrinology comprises:

  • Endocrinology Unit,
  • Nuclear Medicine Unit,
  • Endocrinology Clinic,
  • Nuclear Medicine Clinic.

The department offers:

- 21 beds for patients requiring diagnosis or treatment of endocrine disorders,

- 5 beds for patients undergoing isotope therapy,

- Densitometry Laboratory equipped with a Horizon densitometer with the possibility of testing bone density applying DEXA method in all locations including the assessment of body composition and bone mineral density throughout the skeleton,

Diagnosis and Treatment Laboratory using the isotope of iodine 131-I with a single-head Mediso gamma camera dedicated to research using high-energy gamma emitters.

We conduct a complete biochemical, hormonal and imaging diagnosis of the conditions of pituitary gland, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and gonads.

In cooperation with the Department of Molecular Biology we conduct full molecular diagnostics of genetic endocrine diseases, such as: MEN-1 and MEN-2 syndromes, familial medullary thyroid carcinoma or familial pheochromocytomas.

Experienced and highly-educated staff as well as excellent conditions enable us to conduct specialized isotope treatments using beta and alpha emitters in patients with: thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, prostate cancer, metastatic bone disease.

Annually approximately 2,600 patients are treated in the Department and further 30,000 in our clinics. We provide patients with thyroid cancer comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment based on surgery and radioiodine therapy. We participate in clinical trials of new drugs for patients with invasive thyroid cancer. Patients who despite the available treatments (total surgery, adjuvant therapy with radioactive iodine) report the progression of the disease undergo targeted therapy with the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which block the mechanism of proliferation of cancer cells.
